Arts Envoy – Border Narrative , Cross-border stories of resilience and human triumph

Arts Envoy is a project aiming at developing a performance and audiovisual depicting ‘Border Narratives, Cross-border stories of resilience and human triumph’. The project is an initiative by Contact Base with the support of the U.S Consulate of Kolkata to bring stories across borders on shared cultures, values and human lives. The project brought together 15 young professionals and performance artists from India (12), and Bangladesh (3) to share their experiences across India- Bangladesh borders. The team worked closely with theatre exponents of the Bond Street Theatre, U.S to develop dance theatre collaboration.

A workshop from November 26 to December 15 was organized at the American Center, Kolkata which was facilitated by Joanna Sherman and Michael McGuigan from Bond Street Theatre, USA. During the workshop the team where created images, shared concepts and developed strategies for non-verbal communication. The story touched on Partition, women and peace-making, the role of the State, violence and markets. The characters, dialogues, music and props were finalized. The participants performed at two border locations – Petrapole, India- Bangladesh border checkpoint and Kalidanga Village in South 24 Parganas on Dec 8 and 10 respectively. After that the participants did performance at the American Center on Dec 13 followed by two more performances in Kolkata on Dec 14 at the Bengal Music College and Indian Museum. On December 15, there was an informal feedback session and the participants were given certificates. The youth from both countries expressed that although they were separated by borders the culture was very similar which called for deeper bonding between communities and diaspora on either side.
