Y4BIZ – Youth For Business

Y4BIZ (Youth For Business) is an initiative to support the youth to develop their business ideas from the initial stage to a sustainable and scalable business model. The initiative started as a talent hunt by Contact Base ( in association with the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, to identify young, emerging and aspiring entrepreneurs from Eastern India focusing on the states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. In the preparatory phase, Y4BIZ team made multiple visits to the state capitals of Assam, Bihar & Jharkhand. Guwahati visit was made between 10th to 13th October, 2017, Patna and Ranchi between 10th to 11th October and 12th to 14th October, 2017 respectively. In these visits the team met Entrepreneurship Development Cells of few Educational Institutes, Entrepreneurship Development Organizations, Chambers, Incubators and Individuals working to develop entrepreneurship network. Y4BIZ organized three Networking Meets in the state capitals of Assam, Bihar & Jharkhand on 14th, 16th and 17th November respectively. The Networking Meets aimed to facilitate interactions and development of a network between local business leaders and young entrepreneurs. The Networking meets were followed by the launch of Y4BIZ which took place at the American Center, Kolkata on 21st November, 2017.

Registration of the application process for the online capacity building course by IC2 Institute, University of Texas started on November 21, 2017 & was closed on January, 2018. More than 150 applications were received out of which 25% of the applicants were women. 57 ideas were moved to the next level where participants from Assam (16%), Bihar (23%), Jharkhand (19%) and West Bengal (42%) were offered the Innovation Readiness Series – an online capacity building course consisting of ten modules by IC2 Institute, University of Texas, Austin.

38 participants were selected from the IC2 Course to attend the Y4BIZ Entrepreneurship Development Program, an online capacity building course by The Strategic Academy that took place from April to May. During this period the participants attended sessions through virtual classes twice a week. After the course a 4 day long residential boot camp was organized by Y4BIZ from 17 to 20 May, 2018 where 29 ideas were presented covering various sectors like digital healthcare, IT, online salon, online legal platform, agriculture, animal husbandry, solar energy, food, soft-skill training, education, and many others. 15 experts, mentors, and entrepreneurs interacted with during boot camp.

Altogether 15 participants including 3 women were shortlisted by the jury for the finale of Y4BIZ on Sep 7, 2018.  A wild entry was selected on the basis of the business plan and overall performance along with the top 15 participants.

Tanumoy Sarkar bagged the award for the Most Promising Business for offering nutritious, fresh food in lunchboxes at school tiffin hours. The award for the Most Innovative Business went to Pulkit Jain from Jharkhand for developing low-cost CNC Milling and 3D Printing Hybrid Workstations through his company Automated Innovations. With her empowering work in online teaching, Priyadarshini Dey earned the award for the Most Impactful Business. Kalyan Koley earned a special mention for his work in artificial insemination in Bengal goats.
