Be Alert Raise Alarm — Awareness Campaign to Stop TIP

India is a source, transit point and destination for human trafficking. However, India is a special case where 90% of the trafficking happens within the country. West Bengal and Bihar, which share international borders with Bangladesh and Nepal, respectively, and Jharkhand are particularly vulnerable to the crime.

In collaboration with the U.S. Consulate General at Kolkata and Shakti Vahini, we launched a campaign ‘Be Alert Raise Alarm #stophumantrafficking’ to generate awareness on the latest trends and modalities of human trafficking and ways to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls as well as boys and youths, especially those belonging to poor families. The campaign covered West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar between mid-March and mid-May, 2017.

A vehicle, transformed into a travelling Caravan and designed in local languages with thematic messages, news clippings and helpline numbers, toured across the three states. The Caravan carried the campaign teams and theatre groups, apart from posters, leaflets, stickers and exhibits.

The campaign partners included several agencies of the state governments concerned as well as the police forces of the three states and over 70 NGOs and 28 schools and colleges.

At the end of the campaign, the Caravan had covered 115 locations in 19 districts of the three states!

Audiences were engaged in activities like post-theatre show interaction, quiz and poster making. Film on trafficking was screened during the campaign. Thousands liked the campaign page on Facebook, ‘Be Alert, Raise Alarm’, and joined the public group ‘I Fight TIP’ and Twitter handle @ifightTIP. Youngsters also sent doodles and graphic stories detailing different ways to prevent human trafficking. The winners were awarded at a conclave on trafficking in persons (TIP) in Patna on May 13, 2017.

The campaign brought to light the modes used by the traffickers and people appreciated the information disseminated, especially the helpline numbers and the existing government schemes. They also learnt about anti-human trafficking units (AHTUs) and reported cases of missing children which even led to rescues!
