Peaceniks: Combating Violent Extremism in South Asia

‘Peaceniks’ is an initiative to build a movement led by youths to combat violent extremism within their communities. It is being undertaken in association with the US Consulate General, Kolkata. Our strategy includes empowering select youngsters with the wherewithal to emerge as “peace warriors”.

Altogether 30 participants from Bangladesh, Nepal and different states of India participated in the first Peaceniks Workshop at the American Center in Kolkata, from February 21 to 23, 2018. The sessions trained the group to use digital, social and cultural media more effectively to spread their activities and networks.

A cultural collaboration developed at the workshop was showcased at the Peaceniks Music Festival at Mohar Kunj, Kolkata, on 24 February. Two young music bands from Nepal and Kolkata, Mi Ku and Folks of Bengal, respectively, performed at the event.

Information on activities in 2018 are available in Peaceniks YouTube channel and Facebook channels.

A two day workshop titled Combating Fake News- Designing a Campaign for Building Peace was organized on Aug 31- Sep 1, 2018 at the American Center Kolkata which aimed at creating a space for dialogue and ideas on addressing this challenge and in turn designing a campaign for building peaceful communities.

In 2019 the Peaceniks champions will be using digital tools, art, music and theatre in building peace and countering the growing violent extremism.
