The Soul of Sur Jahan:
The Workshops

“The workshops are about souls connecting… For when hearts unite and souls merge, music follows naturally,” so said Amitava Bhattacharya, our Founder Director, the moving spirit behind Sur Jahan.

In sync with this essence, Sur Jahan aims to bring the music of the world together — for global peace, harmony and the brotherhood of man. Earlier the festival was known as Sufi-Sutra, an annual event that had carved out a niche for itself both in the global musical calendar and in the locals’ hearts. It is held in the first weekend of February every year in Kolkata with a follow-up act in Goa. Workshops are a distinctive feature of the festival where local musicians and troupes collaborate with the visiting bands, creating a union of souls that bring myriad sounds from the farthest corners of the world together and turn into a treat for the performing artists as well as the audience. It also helps artists connect with their audiences and enrich themselves musically.
