2nd Darjeeling Kalimpong Folk Festival at Kalimpong

The 2nd edition of Darjeeling Kalimpong Folk Festival was held at Kalimpong Mela Ground from 26 to 28 October, 2018. The event was a great success with 300 performing artists from 16 different Hill communities attending and performing on the occasion!

Albaluna, a band from Portugal led by Ruben Monteiro, regaled audiences with a fantastic performance at the inauguration. There were 16 stalls on the Mela ground representing each of the 16 communities. They displayed their handicrafts, cuisine and colourful costumes. Around 70 handicraft artists from different parts of the Darjeeling Hills participated in the festival. Locals and people from nearby towns came in big numbers, followed by tourists, including foreigners. Padmashri Awardee, veteran folk musician-composer-lyricist Sonam Tshering Lepcha graced the occasion as a special guest. The festival was also extensively covered by the local and national English print media and television channels.

Village Melas play a very important role in inclusive development, preservation of intangible cultural heritage and bringing pride to the villages who are the bearers of their ancestral traditions.
